The winners of the 13th RTS Student Television Awards were announced at an Awards Ceremony on Friday 16 May 2008 at the Barbican Centre, Silk Street, London EC2Y 8DS. The Awards were Chaired by Peter Salmon and Hosted by George Lamb. The Ceremony was attended by key television professionals, students and tutors.

For the sixth year running, the entries were split into two groups: Undergraduate and Postgraduate. Awards were made in three categories - Animation, Factual and Drama. Undergraduate entries were judged on a regional basis and these regional winners were then put forward for National Judging. The Undergraduate National Jury selected the nominees from the regional winners and the winner was selected by secret ballot. The Postgraduate nominees and winners were judged at national level only.

NATIONAL WINNERS

UNDERGRADUATE ANIMATION
Solar, Ian Wharton & Edward Shires, Cumbria Institute of the Arts
“A simple story, beautifully executed. The original look was art directed to perfection, with very high production values. The animation, style, music and effects all contributed to a truly atmospheric fantasy world.”

Nominees
Keith Reynolds Can’t Make It Tonight, Felix Massie, International Film School Wales, University of Wales, Newport
Leo, Nicholas Easter & Michael Walker, University of Lincoln

POSTGRADUATE ANIMATION

Procrastination, Johnny Kelly & Michael Wyeld, Royal College of Art
“A simple idea, well-developed and executed. The pacing of the film was well thought out, both in the direction of the voice and in the many examples of procrastination shown. The theme was well-executed in the many inventive forms of animation on display.”

Nominees
Dog, Hermann Karlsson, Edinburgh College of Art
For The Love Of God, Joe Tucker, Raphael Warner, Liam Iandoli, Tine Jespersen, Carly Reddin, Miikka Leskinen, Michael Wyeld & Miguel D’Oliveira, National Film and Television School

UNDERGRADUATE FACTUAL

The Roundabouters, Andrew Parry & Catherine McMahon, International Film School Wales, University of Wales, Newport
“…a gem of a documentary about the least likely subject. It hardly seemed feasible that roundabouts could arouse such passion or that a film about them could be so warm and witty. It managed to reflect the absurdity of the subject but with a great warmth towards its off-the-wall contributors…this film was a delight that stays with you.”

Nominees
Waiting For The One, Joe Oddie, Miri Katz, Laurence Horstman & Diane Lukins, University of Bristol
A Wolf In The Bookcase, Peter Grogan, Amanda Sweeney, Seanai Conlan, Nicola Long, Matthew Kirrane, Ciara McHugh, Darren Bolger & Ken Macgiolla Phadraig, Dublin Institute of Technology

POSTGRADUATE FACTUAL

Just Like Mom, Maria Eduarda Andrade & Isabel Rodriguez, Goldsmiths, University of London
“…a raw, vivid film that took you on a journey deep into the lives and troubles of three generations of one family in Brazil. You never knew what was coming next, it had so many twists and surprises, but at its heart this film has a compassion for the women prepared to let us in on their darkest moments. Clearly a powerful bond of trust had been formed between the film-maker and her damaged but dignified subjects.”

Nominees
A Little Kingdom, Prashant K Roy, David Cox, Sian Angharad Williams, Rosemary Hill, Reem El Swehli, Roger Storrud, Matthew Tickner & Sitara Menon, University of Bristol
Tehran Backyard, Roxana Pope & Peter Vilk, Edinburgh College of Art

UNDERGRADUATE DRAMA

Bright Idea, Vincent Gallagher & Angela Senior, Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology
“A clever and simple joke worked well as the basis of a nicely observed and well directed short film. The repeat of the ‘outcome’ of the joke gave the film energy and an excellent sense of growing anticipation.”

Nominees
Isabella, Geoffrey Taylor, Tom Reynolds, Vasilis Karatziva, Charlie Stoddart, Eifion Jones, Christopher Brodigan & Bonny Colvile Hyde, University of the West of England
Special Alexander, Eddy Elliott, Staffordshire University

POSTGRADUATE DRAMA

Friends Forever, Marçal Forés, Ania Nakov, Melanie Martinez, Eduard Grau, Marketa Korinkova, Miikka Leskinen, Chu-Li Shewring & Natalie Holt, National Film and Television School
“…an ambitious piece of story-telling which succeeded in holding an audience through its pace and performance. The direction was impressively and confidently innovative, and the casting was also excellent.”

Nominees
Ela, Silvana Aguirre Zegarra, Gavin Humphries, Liam Iandoli, Dan Gill, Fiona DeSouza, Ayush Ahuja & Chris White, National Film and Television School
On My Way, Yuan Liu and Team, Northern Film School, Leeds Metropolitan University
