Fixed-rig productions have come a long way since the first Big Brother in 2000. As the technology and editorial has become more ambitious, we have been inside hospitals, schools, police stations, chicken shops and even underground observing burrowing animals. Fixed rig technology allows us to observe worlds with most minimal disruption and capture human emotions and reactions in their truest form.
With new and even more ambitious fixed rig documentaries on the horizon for Channel 4 and others, we look behind the scenes and ask how a fixed rig camera production is made from securing access and consents from institutions and individuals, to installing the rig, to ingesting and editing thousands of hours of footage. We also ask what it is about fixed rig camera technology that allows a unique style of storytelling that resonates with audiences.
