Yorkshire favourite, Barry Cryer brought warmth and humour to last night’s Royal Television Society Yorkshire Centre annual awards, held at the Queens, Leeds. Among the repeated winners were those associated with the hit television drama, Unforgiven as well as Leeds-based True North Productions. Recognising his long career as crime reporter, the BBC’s John Cunday was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award. His reporting spans 35 years, covering news stories such as the Yorkshire Ripper, Hillsborough and the Shannon Matthews story.
Unforgiven won in the Best Drama Series category and Sally Wainwright took away the Writer of the Year award for the same programme.

But it was True North Productions that dominated the evening’s awards. The company’s winners included Nick Thorpe who won Picture Editor of the Year, Mark Stokes for Camerawork of the Year, and the company’s programme, Shannon – The Mother of all Lies winning Factual Programme of the Year (Terrestrial Network). True North also won Independent Production Company of the Year.
BBC Yorkshire & Lincolnshire were also big winners with reporter Jamie Coulson winning Television Journalist of the Year, Martin Armstrong winning Unsung Hero of the Year, and Inside Out’s Story of Michael Barnett winning Factual/Feature Programme of the Year (Regional).
Leeds Post won the Craft Team Award for Wire in the Blood for Coastal Productions, Andrew Dobson of Goodwood Productions for Sport England won Sport Coverage of the Year, and The British Transport Films for BBC English Regions for BBC Four won Factual Programme of the Year (Digital Channel).
