Television Buildings in the UK

In 1989, the Society decided to compile a list identifying those buildings which have witnessed milestones in the history of television. This was intended to bring to light those buildings of special importance in order that they may be awarded a Royal Television Society plaque.

The History and Archives Group was assigned the arduous task of compiling this formidable list. Although the 20th century is but a short span in the history of architecture, it covers the whole epoch of building for broadcasting.

The rapid development of broadcasting gave rise to some spectacular examples of architecture, and this document reveals the many changes of companies and moves between premises, in addition to identifying the milestones.

Introduction

The History and Archives Specialist Group originally conceived the idea of the list in 1989 with the object of identifying buildings which might merit an RTS plaque, recognising their significance in the history and development of television.

The compilation of the list turned out to be more difficult than originally envisaged, particularly the problem of providing annotations for the older buildings which no longer survive. We have, therefore, decided to publish the list now in its current form as a working document with the idea of collecting further information from readers, including more information for the annotations, comments on those included, and any omissions and views on the significance of particular buildings.

The list indicates whether the buildings are currently in use for television purposes. Those associated exclusively with radio have not been included, nor premises housing largely administrative functions for satellite companies. We also decided not to include an exhaustive list of transmitters but comments and views would be most welcome on whether those of major significance should be added, and if so, which ones.

We would appreciate information on any aspects of the list, which should be addressed to Clare Colvin, Archivist at the Royal Television Society. We would then hope to publish the list in a more final form with recommendations on the buildings appropriate for recognition with a plaque.
