Andy Harries, chief executive and co-founder of Left Bank Pictures, which makes The Crown for Netflix and Strike Back for Sky, shared his experiences on working in drama at this year's RTS Student Programme Masterclasses.

Take your time: “If you are interested in television, you do not have to decide at this stage of the game what you want to do in TV – I have done almost everything … I don’t think it matters doing lots of different things until you finally settle … It took me some time to realise what I was really good at, which was producing.”

Bad things will happen: “Many people have told me that I have no future in television. I have been fired many times and I’ve had a very up and down career. One of my biggest disasters was being a TV presenter – I was literally put on screen and it ended in total humiliation with me being fired at the end of the show.”

Keep on believing: “You have to have an undying belief that you’ve got something to say … I’ve never lacked confidence although I have had terrible times.”

It’s a good time to be starting out: “If you’re going into media, you’ve arrived at a fantastic time – the [TV] world has totally changed. Streaming services from tech companies have taken over.”

Working as a producer: “Ally yourself with great talent. The key to my career as a scripted [producer] has always been my relationship with writers.”
