A new way of transmitting outside broadcasts is being used by ITN across London.

ITN are using new wireless transmission technology BT Media Live to broadcast footage, bypassing the need for a traditional satellite truck.

The camera-mounted technology, delivered by BT's Media and Broadcast arm, works by transmitting video through radio waves to a receiver hub, such as London's BT Tower, from where it is sent to the broadcaster or news agencies.

ITN's Chief Technology Officer, Bevan Gibson said: "This new solution gives our news teams another option to facilitate our core strength which is producing timely, excellent news content for programmes including ITV News, Channel 4 News and 5 News."

The new technology makes it quicker and easier to transmit live from a location, according to Steve Gore-Smith, Deputy Head of ITN Newsgathering. "There's no parking up, running cables out, putting a mast or dish up, all the sort of things that you would on a conventional truck," he says.

ITN has been using the technology across London for the past two months. Plans are now underway for more BT Media Live hubs to cover cities including Manchester, Birmingham and Cardiff, allowing broadcasters across the country to make use of the new technology.
