NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED FOR
RTS YORKSHIRE AWARDS 2016

Yorkshire, 25 May 2016 – The Royal Television Society (RTS) Yorkshire Centre has today announced the shortlist for its annual awards, which take place at The Royal Armouries in Leeds on Friday 24 June. Presenting the awards will be Emmerdale actors Mark Charnock (Marlon Dingle) and Laura Norton (Kerry Wyatt).

The RTS Yorkshire Awards celebrate excellence in production across all platforms. From traditional television output such as documentary and drama, through to news and current affairs, and the latest cutting edge formats, animation and multi-platform.

Dr. Fiona Thompson, Chair of the RTS Yorkshire Centre said: “We’re a region proud of its television industry – and for good reason. Following a record breaking number of entries this year, the RTS judges have put together a shortlist of nominations of the highest quality which reflect an incredible year of television for Yorkshire.”

A raft of household names are up for awards this year including James Martin, who is nominated in the Presenter category for BBC One’s Home Comforts at Christmas against On Closer Inspection’s Peg Alexander (Made in Leeds) and Calendar’s Duncan Wood (ITV Yorkshire).

Peter Kay is nominated in the Factual Programme category for Peter Kay: 20 Years of Funny (Shiver for BBC One). Also nominated in this category is Secret History - London’s Lost Graveyard: The Crossrail Discovery (True North for Channel 4) and Beatrix Potter with Patricia Routledge (Daisybeck Studios for More4).

In the Actor category, Sarah Lancashire is nominated for her role in BBC One’s Happy Valley (Red Production Company) against Emmerdale’s Charlotte Bellamy (ITV Studios for ITV) and Andrew Shim, who is nominated for This Is England ‘90 (Warp Films/Big Arty for Channel 4).

Happy Valley and This Is England ’90 are also fighting it out for the award in the Drama Category, alongside BBC One’s Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (Cuba Pictures/Feel Films), while their directors, Sally Wainwright, Shane Meadows and Toby Haynes respectively, are each nominated for the Director Award. Sally Wainwright is also nominated in the Writer category.

Three Yorkshire-based independent production companies, Daisybeck Studios, Rocket and True North, are in the running this year for the Indie Spirit Award.
