Chairman of the Royal Television Society North East and Border Centre Graeme Thompson wrote in the event programme:

Welcome to the Royal Television Society North East and Borders Annual Awards — a night to celebrate and showcase the work of our best creative talent. As you will see from the number and quality of entries, it has been another good year for production. Drama, documentary, current affairs, games and on-line content production have all been making their presence felt and contributing to the current boom in UK creative industries. I’m delighted to see tomorrow’s generation of programme-makers sharing the spotlight tonight as once again we include the RTS Student Awards alongside the professional categories.

My thanks to Chair of Judges Sam Stamp and her distinguished judging panels who had the daunting task of picking tonight’s winners. My appreciation also to our event sponsors who generously support our work in this region. Special mention to our Principal Sponsor Saville Audio Visual — a long-time supporter and events specialist — who are once again staging tonight’s show. And a big thank you to my hard-working colleagues on the Awards Steering Group and Centre Committee.
