The 10th Doctor and Donna are reuniting for scenes due to air in 2023, to coincide with the show’s 60th anniversary.

David Tennant and Catherine Tate will return to their well-loved roles for the first time since the Doctor and Donna parted ways in ‘Journey’s End’ in 2008, when the Doctor had to wipe Donna’s memory in order to save her life. With the Doctor leaving Donna’s family with the stark warning that if she were ever to remember him, she would die, the question arises as to what brings the pair back together?

The news comes after the recent announcement that Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education) will take over from Jodie Whittaker as the new doctor.

Showrunner Russell T Davies commented: “They're back! And it looks impossible - first, we announce a new Doctor, and then an old Doctor, along with the wonderful Donna, what on earth is happening?  Maybe this is a missing story. Or a parallel world. Or a dream, or a trick, or a flashback. The only thing I can confirm is that it’s going to be spectacular, as two of our greatest stars reunite for the battle of a lifetime.”

*This previous article stating the pair are uniting for a special episode has been amended to state Tennant and Tate will appear in scenes together.
