Sky has released a teaser trailer and first look images for the second series of House of the Dragon.

A prequel set 200 years before Game of Thrones, the show follows power struggles in the court of the ruling Targaryen family. The second series is poised to follow the bloody conflict that will determine who next sits upon on the Iron Throne.

“There is no war so hateful to the gods as a war between kin,” warns Rhaenys Targaryen in the teaser, “and no war so bloody as a war between dragons.”

House of the Dragon is based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, a 2018 book written from the perspective of Archmaester Gyldayn, a fictional scholar. Gyldayn uses historical sources to tell the story of the Targaryen rule over the Seven Kingdoms, which began long before the events of Game of Thrones.

Matt Smith (Doctor Who), Olivia Cooke (Vanity Fair) and Emma D’Arcy (Truth Seekers) all reprise their roles as Daemon Targaryen, Alicent Hightower and Rhaenyra Targaryen, respectively. Joining the cast are Clinton Liberty (Holding) as Addam of Hull, Tom Taylor (Doctor Foster) as Cregan Stark and Tom Bennett (EastEnders) as Ulf.

Amongst those already announced as new additions to the cast are Simon Russell Beale (The Death of Stalin) as Simon Strong, Freddie Fox (Cucumber) as Gwayne Hightower and Abubakar Salim (Raised by Wolves) as Alyn of Hull. Gayle Rankin (GLOW) is also joining as Alys Rivers.

The second series of House of the Dragon will air on Sky Atlantic in Summer 2024, when it will also be available on streaming service NOW.
