Start the new year off right with some familiar faces on The Great New Year Bake Off, the astounding true story of Mr Bates vs The Post Office, or the discovery of a past forgotten in The Tourist.

Mr Bates vs The Post Office

ITV1, 9.00pm

The Detectorist’s Toby Jones stars as the Erin Brockovich of the British Post Office Scandal, Mr Bates.

Described in the trailer as “the largest miscarriage of justice in British history”, a glitch in the Post Office system from 2000-2013, meant over 700 members of staff were taken to court on incorrect counts of theft, false accounting, or fraud.

This four-part drama takes a closer look at the 2019 trial where a group of sub-postmasters formed the “Justice for Sub-Postmasters alliance” and fought to get comeuppance for the years spent in poverty, social blacklists, or even prison. Starring alongside Toby Jones will be Black Mirror star Monica Dolan and Gentleman Jack’s Katherine Kelly.

The Tourist Series Two

BBC One, 9.00pm

The UK’s most watched drama of 2022 saw Jamie Dornan star as Elliot, a man who wakes up in Australia with no recollection of his past. Police Constable Helen (Danielle MacDonald, Dumplin) helped Elliot half-piece his life back together, all the while both wondering why someone wanted him dead.

In the highly anticipated second series of the thriller, Helen and Elliot will journey to Dublin, to unearth more of Elliot’s past. Once there, they find themselves dragged into longstanding feuds and are forced to deal with consequences of actions Elliot doesn’t recall making.

The Great New Year Bake Off

Mark (series 11), Maxy (series 13) and Maggie and Jürgen (series 12) may have won the nation’s hearts in their first run of Bake Off, but they didn’t quite make it to the trophy (or engraved glass cake stand). In the Great New Year Bake Off, they are here to give it a second go.

Glamourous judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood will return to the tent to judge the special, with hosts Noel Fielding and newly inducted Alison Hammond to oversee and encourage the bakers. With Paul’s famous Hollywood handshakes on offer, who will reign victorious?
