RTS Midlands Awards 2018

Awards Ceremony

We are now inviting entries into the RTS Midlands Awards 2018.

The Awards will be presented on the evening of 20th November at The Town Hall, Birmingham.

The online entry submission system will be open from 21st May until 12th July.

Category Title

Overview

1. Single Television Drama or Drama Series

Award for best scripted serial drama, a one off special and returning drama series. Must be at least principally shot in the Midlands (55%) AND/OR principally produced in the Midlands. You must enter one whole episode from a drama series or the whole of a one-off drama. The judges will be looking for high quality story-telling, originality, creativity and technical

expertise throughout the production.

2. Acting Performance - Male

This Award recognises an outstanding male acting performance. Entrants should be based in the Midlands or feature in content produced in the Midlands.

3. Acting Performance - Female

This Award recognises an outstanding female acting performance. Entrants should be based in the Midlands or feature in content produced in the Midlands.

4. Outstanding New Talent

(on and off screen)

This Award recognises the very best of the new talent from the broadcast, digital and online community across the region and includes:

•             Front of camera (presenters/actors/reporters – including online  

               reporters)

•             Craft skills

•             Writers

•             Producers

•             Directors

•             Post production

Entries should be up to a maximum of 10 minutes in length and should include a minimum of two items to demonstrate the talent.

5. On Screen personality

This Award recognises an outstanding on-screen personality featured within a Midland based production broadcast on any platform/or based in the Midlands broadcast on any platform.

•             Presenter

•             Journalist

•             Show host

•             Interviewer

•             Commentator

The subject covered by the personality will not be judged.  It will be the individual’s delivery and on screen relationship with the viewer that will be considered. 

Dramatic characterisations are not eligible (see Category titled Acting Performance of the Year).   Entries should be a maximum of 10 minutes in length and should include a minimum of three examples of work.

6. Journalist of the Year

The Journalist of the Year award is for the best work during the year by a broadcast or online journalist. Reporters, video, online journalists and correspondents are welcome to enter, they can be specialists or in general news reporting. Open to news organisations, agencies, websites or production companies.  Broadcast entries should be no longer than 30 minutes with no internal edits in individual  reports. Online entries should be no longer than 10 minutes. The entry should include a minimum of three items to demonstrate the range of the journalist.

7.  Digital Creativity & best use of content across multiple platforms

This Award recognises innovation and outstanding achievement in multi-platform digital content including:

  • Online
  • Interactive TV
  • Apps
  • Digital Media
  • Blogs
  • On screen graphics
  • Podcasts
  • Web video

8. News Programme of the Year

The Award for Best News programme will be awarded based on quality of coverage, presentation and information in the following:

•             Live and Studio news

•             Sporting coverage

•             Real events

This can be one whole programme or a compilation. If the entry is a compilation it should be edited appropriately as if for broadcast. Max 30 minutes.

Must be at least principally shot in the Midlands (55%) AND/OR principally produced in the Midlands.

9. Current Affairs Programme of the Year

This Award will be presented to an outstanding current affairs programme Must be at least principally shot in the Midlands (55%) AND/OR principally produced in the Midlands, and may include content from national or network programming. Entries may be one half hour programme or a selection of up to three stories from a series transmitted during the period from 1st July 2017 to 30th June 2018.

10. Craft – Production

This Award recognises achievement behind the camera and includes camera, sound, lighting, directing, producing, drone camera pilots and special effects.

11. Craft – Post Production

This Award recognises achievement in creative artistry, innovation and audio & visual manipulation and includes video or film editing, music - original score or original song, sound design, sound mixing & editing, visual effects, title sequences, graphic design including work created in news production.

12. Factual Entertainment/ Popular Factual Series

This category is for broadcast material which falls into factual entertainment / features genres which includes Lifestyle, Fact-Ent, Travel, Cookery, Magazine and formats/ Entries MUST come from a factual series or a one-off ‐ although only one edition of the series may be submitted. Please note that “one edition of the series” excludes not only compilation entries but compilation broadcasts unless there is substantial new content. Must be at least principally shot in the Midlands (55%) AND/OR principally produced in the Midlands.

13. Specialist Factual Programme/Content/Series

Award for excellence in the production of special factual programming.

Entries may come from one off programmes or a series - although only one edition of a series may be submitted.

Must be at least principally shot in the Midlands (55%) AND/OR principally produced in the Midlands.

14. Single documentary/ documentary feature

 

 

This category is designed for programmes conceived as a single documentary or feature. The documentary/feature should be submitted in full or a single episode from a series. This category is aimed at documentaries of a general nature.

Must be at least principally shot in the Midlands (55%) AND/OR principally produced in the Midlands.

The programme may be across any platform, including regional, national, international and digital formats.

15. Writer

This award is to recognise the wealth of writing talent in the region. Demonstrating exceptional talent and skill this award is for stand out pieces of work in the world of scriptwriting.

The judges will be looking for quality, originality, style and creativity from this writer. This award is for anyone who received a ‘writer’ credit on any qualifying show including drama, comedy, children’s TV or programmes featuring significant amounts of scripted content. The programme may be across any platform, including regional, national, international and digital formats.

Please submit either the full programme or, in the case of a series, one programme from the series.

16. Children’s

This category recognises professional excellence in the field of children’s programmes. Series (one episode) and single programmes can be entered for children's drama, factual, comedy and entertainment programmes. Animations  are included in this category

Programmes must have been commissioned and produced specifically for the child audience, and broadcast during children's airtime.

All entries must be at least principally shot in the Midlands (55%) AND/OR principally produced in the Midlands.

17. Short Form

Award for short form content - broadcast on any platform - 10 minutes max- non scripted and scripted singles, series or insert into a longer single, for example, The One Show inserts, corporate, commercial  promo videos etc

Also includes animation (bar Children’s) broadcast on any platform. This category includes stop motion animation, CG animation and 2D drawn animation. Judges will consider the animation craft and how well the animation works for its target audience.

All entries must be at least principally shot in the Midlands (55%) AND/OR principally produced in the Midlands.

 

You are invited to submit programmes or other content which were, or will be broadcast and/or published between 1st July 2017 to 30th June 2018 for consideration for the Midlands Centre Awards for 2018.

ENTRY INFORMATION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

  • Programmes or content must have been produced, published, commissioned or creatively controlled by a Midlands based company or must be at least principally shot in the Midlands (55%) and/or principally produced in the Midlands.

  • Midlands Region for the purposes of these Awards includes: Derbyshire, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands and Worcestershire.

    RTS Midlands strongly encourages diversity, in all its forms, across all categories.

  • The entry must have been first broadcast, released or published on a media platform between 1/7/17 and 30/6/18

  • You may enter your work whether or not you are a member of the RTS.

  • All entries must be submitted online by following this link:

  • You will need to register as a user in order to submit your entries.

  • Once you have registered you will need to Create Entry. In this section you can upload any relevant documentation that you would like the judges to consider.

  • To upload your video go to the Video Management tab

  • Please ensure when submitting your entry online that you complete all of the relevant boxes for each entry.

  • Please attached any supporting documentation that you would like the judges to consider to the submission when prompted

  • When submitting your entry make sure you choose to create your entry for RTS MIDLANDS AWARDS as other Centres awards will also be listed here.

  • A 20 second clip of each entry must be submitted along with your entries (not instead of your entry). If your entry is nominated, this clip will be used as part of the presentation at the awards dinner, so please ensure it showcases your entry effectively.
    • If you are entering the same piece of work into more than one category, please ensure you submit a different 20 second clip for each entry.
    • Please ensure you submit your 20 second clip via the Video Management option and clearly mark it as “20 second clip for <<entry title and category entered>>”.

    • Please submit this as well as your entries and not instead of the full item.
    • 20 second clip requirements:
      • 20 second clip with fade from black and fade out to black
      • No clocks
      • File type MP4 only
      • Specify exactly which entry it is for including name of entrant and category

ENTRY FEES

  • There is an entry fee of £50 including VAT per category. 
    • If a programme is entered in one or more categories, a payment is required for each category entered.
    • ENTRIES WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED UNLESS FULL PAYMENT HAS BEEN MADE BEFORE THE CLOSING DATE FOR ENTRIES

    Please note that payment by debit or credit card cannot be accepted.

ENTRY DEADLINES

  • The closing date for entries is Thursday 12th July 2018.  Entries received after this date will not be considered.
  • The online submission system will be open for you to submit entries from Monday 21st May 2018.

JUDGING

  • Each category will be judged by a panel of independent Judges.

  • Judging will take place during August and early September 2018.

  • The Judges reserve the right to move submissions to more appropriate categories if necessary.

  • Details of judges will be given in the Awards Ceremony Programme.

NOMINEES AND WINNERS

  • Nominees will be announced on Monday 24th September 2018.
  • You will be advised by email if you have been nominated.
  • A full list of nominees will be posted on our website.
  • Winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony which will be held on 20th November at The Town Hall, Birmingham.

STUDENT AWARDS

  • The invite to enter the Student Awards plus all category and criteria information will be issued by RTS Head Office in Summer 2018. Student Awards will be presented at a separate ceremony in February 2019. Student Awards are open to anyone over the age of 16 in full-time education.
