Herald in the brand-new year by nursing your sore post-party heads in front of the telly. From the hugely anticipated return of Happy Valley to some comedy treats, here are our top picks for New Year's Day.

Happy Valley

BBC One, 9pm

After a nearly seven-year hiatus, Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) is back on our screens as Happy Valley finally returns for its last ever series.

Approaching retirement, Catherine is still fighting the ever-prevalent problem of drugs in the Valley and finds herself getting closer to the big players in the drugs trade. With her grandson Ryan (Rhys Connah) now 16, Catherine must reckon with the fact that she can no-longer decide whether he wants his father, the horrific criminal Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton), to be a part of his life.

Taskmaster's New Year Treat

Channel 4, 9pm

This special New Year’s episode of Taskmaster will see Taskmaster Greg Davies and his assistant, Little Alex Horne, put a new group of celebrities through the paces with a series of hilarious, tricky tasks to complete.

Competing to win the Taskmaster’s admiration will be Countdown legend Carol Vorderman, Olympic gold medal winner Mo Farah, Radio 1 DJ Greg James, Chicken Shop Date’s Amelia Dimoldenberg and singer Rebecca Lucy Taylor (aka Self Esteem). This year’s coveted trophy takes the form of Greg’s Golden Eyebrows.

The Masked Singer

The unexpected hit format The Masked Singer returns for its fourth series, with twelve mysterious celebrities donning huge, identity-concealing costumes and showing off their singing talents.

The judges attempting to guess which celebrity is hiding ‘behind the mask’ will be Jonathan Ross, Rita Ora, Mo Gilligan and Davina McCall, with Joel Dommett once again taking on hosting duties. The characters include the UK show’s first double act, Cat & Mouse, who will join Fawn, Jacket Potato, Piece of Cake, Pigeon, Rhino, Rubbish, Ghost, Jellyfish, Knitting, Otter and Phoenix.

Romantic Getaway

Sky Comedy, 9pm

Katherine Ryan and Romesh Ranganathan couple up for this new comedy series, starring as Alison and Deacon, a couple desperate to conceive after countless IVF failures.

As the money begins to run out, the pair decide to defraud their boss out of £50,000. Accidentally, Deacon walks away with half a million quid, in the form of a memory stick containing bitcoin. Drawn into the deep criminal underbelly of… Reading, they must evade capture while dealing with all the other stresses that come with IVF.
