An Evening with The Chuckle Brothers

Born in Rotherham Barry and Paul Elliot have been better known as the Chuckle Brothers since they won Opportunity Knocks in 1967. Over the intervening fifty years they have carved out a unique television niche. Their beloved children's show, Chucklevision, ran for over twenty years on CBBC. They've made dozens of guest appearances on other shows from 3-2-1 to Comic Relief. Recently they've been elevated to cult status after their famous catchphrase "from me, to you" was sampled by the rapper Tinchy Strider. And they appear in Leeds hotfoot from their triumphant appearance at Bestival.

Virtual reality and 360⁰ storytelling

Virtual Reality and 360⁰ storytelling is a burgeoning area, and this session attempts to make sense of a new industry backed by major players and billions of dollars.

But there seem to be more questions than answers. Can Virtual Reality ever be anything more than a toy for gamers?  How do you tell a meaningful story in 360⁰? Why would anyone want to wear a headset in their living room? Are consumers actually generating compelling content themselves? Finally, is there any money to be made, and if so, where are the opportunities for producers, commissioners and platforms?

Marcus Ryder

Thursday was an important day for diversity in the media as the government announced a White Paper which enshrined diversity in the BBC charter– but what it really means in reality will all be in the small print.

The Royal Television Society is a charitable organization whose remit is to encourage and celebrate the understanding of television and its related fields. As Chair of the Diversity Committee here is my guide as to what people should be looking out for in the coming months:

Sounding off: Inaudible dialogue is rife among dramas

The recent controversy over poor-quality sound on the hit BBC One show Happy Valley has once again focused senior TV executives’ minds on the problem of inaudible dialogue in drama.

Last month, BBC Controller of TV Channels Charlotte Moore pledged to tackle the “big issue” of sound. She added that it was “incredibly hard to get to the bottom of where things go wrong”. She explained she had introduced a new set of best-practice guidelines to help avoid future problems with inadequate audio.
