RTS Student Television Awards

Congratulations to the Newport Film School.  Their winning entry in the RTS Wales Awards, Bedroom Live, has now won in the Undergraduate Entertainment category of the national RTS Student Television Awards, announced on 17th May.

Annual General Meeting, plus Meet the CEOs

The RTS Wales Centre's AGM took place on the 16th May at the Park Plaza hotel in Cardiff.

May Event:  Following the AGM, we were privileged to present a panel discussion, Meet the CEOs, with the heads of the three main broadcasters in Wales.
"As technology and market forces radically change the world of television, regional broadcasting has been the biggest casualty."  (Institute of Welsh Affairs)
This was a rare opportunity to put a question to the top men in television in Wales.

The day after the above event, the Western Mail published an article with the above title by our Chairman, Tim Hartley, in which he gave a personal overview of the issues facing the broadcasters.

One ITV News Awards

Congratulations to ITV News Cymru Wales on their success at the Awards, presented in London on the 18th May.

They won three golds, one silver and two bronze awards at the annual ceremony that celebrates achievement in ITV's nations and regions newsrooms across the UK.
 

Getting into the Industry

In another of our shared events with the Skillset Media Academy Wales, we presented a panel of industry professionals, followed by group breakouts, to discuss what skills you need, and how to get yourself noticed.
That was at Bangor University on the 3rd May.

Celtic Media Festival

CMF logoThis year the Celtic Media Festival was held in Swansea from 24th-26th April.  Along with the Skillset Media Academy Wales, we co-hosted an event, Getting Networked, for anyone seeking a career in television.

For members without a CMF pass, there was an invitation to a seminar on The Media and Minority Languages at the National Waterfront Museum.  It was organised by the World Indigenous Television Broadcasters Network (WITBN), the Network to Promote Linguistic Diversity (NPLD) and S4C.

March Event

"The TV Revolution is Underway: Multiscreen and Over-the-top Content Delivery" was the title of a presentation given by David Jenkins of Nagra Media UK at S4C, Llanishen, on March 26th.  In David's view, Over-the-Top (OTT) content delivery, where TV can be carried on any sufficiently fast  Internet connection rather than a dedicated network, is fundamentally challenging conventional broadcast models.
